I was reviewing our discussion about a more automated test solution on the coil groups of the AC traction motor stators with David Schump, Baker’s owner. David is planning a trip to Erie sometime within the next few weeks and could discuss the automated test option with engineers at Erie at that time. I would accompany David to that meeting. Have you been able to discuss this option with anyone in Erie? Is there any additional information Baker can provide at this time? David mentioned that it is actually better to surge test the coils as groups rather than as single coils since this allows misconnections to be detected which otherwise will be missed using the test procedure we reviewed at last week. The turn-to-turn test voltage using a group test is still plenty adequate for detecting insulation problems. Let me know what I can do to help. Catalina was in Erie this week discussing equipment for the new AC traction motor line. Catalina is the project leader. Talked with Antonio and Jaime. They have a test spec for the GEB13 written by P. Hokanson in Erie. It is based on using a D12000 for testing individual coils after insertion in the stator and a manual resistance meter and a manual AC hipot. Test each coil at 3500 VAC hipot and 3500 volt surge. There are 72 coils or 144 leads. Coil resistance is between 14.2 - 15.4 mOhms. After connection and varnish they do another resistance test and a 4500 VAC hipot test. No surge test. We discussed the D12 as the replacement for the D12000. Also discussed the D15 option. Quote a D12 per Antonio. He says even though Catalina is the project manager he will decide on the test equipment within their budget. They are concerned about safety. They are supposed to have a physical barrier when performing these tests so they are concerned about how to do this with manual equipment. They also don't trust the operators to do it properly. So Antonio would like an AST type solution. I asked if they can test coil groups after coils are interconnected to reduce the number of test leads. Jaime was brought in to this discussion. He and Antonio will ask GE in Erie if this would be allowed and get back to me next week. May do a HV AST quote based on the findings.
